An appeal has been launched by The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) to raise money to support those caught in the Haiti earthquake.

Up to 200,000 people are feared dead after the quake which measured 7.2 on the Richter scale, struck Haiti and took just 60 seconds to destroy large parts of the capital city. The earthquake caused major damage to Port-au-Prince and the surrounding area. Many landmark buildings were significantly damaged or destroyed, including the Presidential Palace (President René Préval, who was in the building at the time, escaped injury), the National Assembly building, the Port-au-Prince Cathedral, and the main jail.

The United Nations says the Haiti quake is the worst disaster in its history. The DEC is raising money to help fund rescue efforts, as well as food, water, shelter and medicines for survivors.
